Morse was born on Oct. 5, 1918 at Cooks Corners, the son of Leslie and Gertrude Morse Sykes. Morse proudly served his country during World War II serving in the United States Army. He crossed the English Channel on huge barges, which later served as floating docks for the invasion of Europe. He was a member of the Belding United Methodist Church, past president and member of the Belding Lions Club, member of the American Legion Post 203, Belding and was a board member and leader with the Boy Scouts of America. Morse worked at First Security Bank, now Independent Bank for 32 years - serving as vice president and retiring in 1983. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed hunting and fishing and his trips to Drummond Island. For a number of years he enjoyed morning coffee with the boys at area restaurants in Belding. Morse was preceded by his parents, brother Joe and first wife Marjorie in 1990. He later married Lois E. Hull-Nichoson on January 4, 1992 in Belding, and she survives along with his children, Stewart (Janet) Sykes of Grand Rapids, Brad (Janice) Sykes of Grand Ledge and Robin (Dick) Edmonds of Gaylord. Morse is also survived by his stepchildren, Carla (Barry) Nye of Greenville and Craig (Pam) Nichoson of Grattan; his grandchildren, Scott and Terri Sykes, Shannon and Pat Biergans, Rori and Pat Hornacek, Sherry and Dave Sbraccia, Greg Sykes and Mallory Edmonds; his stepgrandchildren, Calvin Nichoson, Audrey Nichoson, Aaron Nichoson, Michelle Nichoson and six great- grandchildren. Morse is also survived by his twin sisters and their spouses, June and Fred Peabody of Haslett, Joyce and Don Geiger of Ionia and his sister- in-law, Helen Sykes of Saranac. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home Belding with Pastor Connie Shatz officiating. Interment will follow in Otisco Township Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Belding United Methodist Church or the Alvah N. Belding Library.
