Mrs. Maggie Sykes passes away at Traverse City last Friday afternoon. Funeral held Monday (May 1, 1913) at Grand Rapids (MI). Mrs. Maggie Sykes (nee Maggie Vance) a sister of Mrs. Wm. H. Patrick, of Pewamo, passed away last Friday afternoon at the state hospital at Traverse City (MI). The remains were taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. Leonora Myers, at Grand Rapids, where funeral services were held Monday afternoon, and interment being made in one of the cemeteries near that city. Besides the brothers and sisters we have already mentioned the deceased leaves two other sisters, Mrs. Josephine Terwilliger and Miss Suela Vance, both of Grand Rapids, a brother, Samuel Vance, of Denver, Colo., and a daughter, Mrs. Sherman Ely, of Lansing (MI). The tragedy of Mrs. Sykes' life was written many years ago at a time when she went down into the valley of the shadow and brought back a beautiful baby girl. When the trembling mite of humanity was placed in the mother's arms relatives were horror-struck to learn that the creator had demanded the mother's reason for the life given that of the babe. For some time she was cared for by relatives here, but later her condition became such that it was found necessary to give her into the keeping of the state. Our readers who knew her in the gladsome happy days of old, will drop a tear in her memory and offer a prayer for the repose of one who suffered so much and so long. (As a side note to the obit - on April 13, 1888 Maggie was sent to the Pontiac Asylum in Michigan. Later she went to the Traverse City State Hospital in Michigan.)
