Ken and his surviving wife Linda were married almost 48 years and both had been residents of Ionia, Michigan for 50 years. Ken was born in the Upper Peninsula, Watton, Michigan on February 23,1937, the son of William and Gertrude Syrjala. He grew up in L' Anse and graduated from Baraga High School in 1955. Since then, he visited family, friends, and the homestead as often as possible and always headed for the sauna at the first opportunity. Ken is survived by his wife, Linda and their five children: Peggy and her husband Greg "Woody" Woodard of Mackinac Island, Michigan and San Antonio, Texas, their children Sunshine Woodard, Jason and Sasha Woodard, and Zac and Elizabeth Woodard. Lynn and her husband David Taylor, their children Janna and Abigail; Derek Syrjala and his wife Carrie, their children Parker, Calvin, Emma and Addison; Darin Syrjala and his wife Lynette, their children Samuel, Larissa, Alexa, and Levi; Greg Syrjala and his wife Melissa, and their son Drake. Ken's siblings: Robert and Jan Syrjala of Flint, MI. Shirley and Ken Albright of Ionia, MI Richard and Alice Syrjala of Grafton, MA Jim and Mary Syrjala of Lyons, MI Edsel and Theresa Syrjala of Ishpeming, MI . Many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ken was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Wayne Syrjala, his parents William and Gertrude Syrjala, sister Loraine Buckner, and nephew Johnny Syrjala. Ken worked for the United States Post Office in Ionia for 30 years and retired from there in 1995. He also raised apples on his farm for 20 years. Ken was an avid antique collector, loved attending auctions, collecting coins and fishing lures. He was a true sportsman: hunting, fishing, and attending his children's baseball and basketball games. For many years he was a Little League coach and loved children. Ken was a longtime member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church and served as deacon and Pastor's helper, Sunday school teacher, and many other positions through the years. He always provided a welcome to guests and a kind word to everyone. Funeral services officiated by Pastors Darren Tharp and Larry Frye will be held at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will take place at Lake Funeral Home, 3521 S. State Rd., Ionia, MI, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2007 and again from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, 405 N. Jefferson St., Ionia, MI. Private internment will take place at Balcom Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial gifts to Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church or Ionia Hospice.
