SMITH ["Lake Odessa Wave," Friday, March 17, 1899 A SUDDEN SUMMONS Herbert R. Smith, a painter by trade, living southeast of the school house, at this village died last Friday night at about 3 o'clock. Mr. Smith retired in the evening with the rest of the family feeling as well as usual, but at about 15 minutes after three o'clock arose from bed to see what time it was, he then got back into bed, and Mrs. Smith asked him what time it was, and he told her, and was evidently feeling all right as he did not complain. He had not been in bed but a moment when he gave a groan that alarmed his wife and she sprang out of bed, and lighted a lamp. She saw immediately that something was wrong and sent to the neighbors, and then tried to arouse her husband from his sleep of death, but to no avail, and he lay quiet in death before the neighbors arrived...He leaves a wife and three children. The funeral was held Monday from the United Brethren church, Rev. Ickes preaching the sermon. The remains were interred in the Lakeside cemetery.
