Ionia Daily Standard - Saturday, Jan. 25, & Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1919

Mrs. Lena Tafel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dennis, was born in Montcalm 
county, Michigan, May 5th, 1878. She was married to Louis Tafel October 23d, 
1901, and to this union were born three children, Maurice, L. J. and Forest. 
Forest died at three years of age; the other children survive Mrs. Tafel. She 
is also survived by her husband, mother and sister, Helen Whitback of 
Greenville and four brothers, Will, Ed., Alvin and John Dennis.

A very near relative gave the minister who officiated at the funeral service 
the following verses indicative of the sterling character of the deceased:

   If all God’s children are his thoughts,
  And I believe ‘tis true- -
  Then what a beautiful thought it was 
  The time He thought of you.

  I cannot say, and I will not gay,
  She is dead; she is just away.
  With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand,
  She has wandered into an unknown land,
  And left us dreaming how very fair,
  It needs must be since she lingers there.

  And you, oh! you, who the wildest yearn
  For the old-time step and the glad return;
  Think of her faring on as dear
  In the love there as the love here;
  Think of her still as the same, I say:
  She is not dead; she is just away. 

Saturday, January 25, 1919
Mrs. Lena C. Tafel, wife of Louis J. Tafel, died on Saturday morning at seven 
o’clock, at the home at 110 Allen street, at the age of forty years. She leaves 
besides her husband, two sons, Maurice and L. J. Jr. She also leaves a mother, 
Mrs. Dennis, and four brothers and a sister at Greenville. The funeral will be 
held on Monday at two o’clock at the home and at two-thirty at the Church of 
Christ, Rev. Buckner officiating. The interment will be in Highland Park.
