Courter was born Dec. 6, 1837 in Ontario, Wayne county, N.Y. She came to Michigan in 1858, remaining here until the summer of 1862 when she returned to New York state. At her father’s home on Union Hill, Monroe county, N.Y., she was united in marriage on Nov. 26, 1863 to Geo. L. Taft, of Ionia, Mich. They immediately came to Michigan and settled on a farm in Ionia township where they lived two years. In 1870 they bought and settled on a farm in Orange township, where she lived most of her married life. In 1860 she was converted and united with the M.E. church, of which she has been an earnest, faithful member for almost half a century. On account of poor health she has been unable to attend church services but rarely for years, but she showed her love for her Savior by following His example and doing what she could for all who came within the circle of her acquaintance. Her family were always her first care, and the pastors of her church soon learned to know the welcome and cheer they always fond in the Taft home, and it became a second home to them. The greatest tribute we could pay to Mrs. Taft is to use the Master’s words, “She hath done what she could.” On account of her poor health, and to be near her only daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Taft moved to Ionia in 1905, where she lived at the time of her death, which occurred on Oct. 1, 1909. In June Mrs. Taft was stricken with paresis of the nerves and was a patient sufferer for four long months. Besides her husband, she leaves three children: Mrs. Geo. L. Kuhtz, of Ionia; John B. Taft, Alberta, Canada; Riley G. Taft, Seattle, Washington; an only sister, Mrs. Julia Beatty, of Union Hill, N.Y., and a large circle of friends, who sincerely mourn her death.
