Taft at his home in Yakima, Washington, Friday. Mr. Taft was the son of the late George L. Taft, Orange township farmer and resident of Ionia for many years. Born in Ionia county, he grew to young manhood here and then went to the Dakotas in the employ of Clark Preston, former Ionia business man. Mr. Taft went on west and in Waterville, Washington, he met and married Miss Nancy Burgess. Later he lived in Idaho and from there went to Edmonton, Alberta, where he served as government guide to prospective homesteaders, and ran mail lines to developing regions. Ten or more years were next lived in the Peace River country where he conducted a general store and had other business interests. Returning to Washington state about the close of the world war, Mr. Taft engaged in business in Seattle and later opened a general store in Tieton, Yakima valley region that was developed by irrigation from a desert to a fruit area. Some years ago active direction of the business was largely given over to his son Howard, who became a partner. Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Gilbert, Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Floyd Anderson, Milton, Wash.; three sons, George of Nashville, Mich., William F. of Yakima, and Howard of Tieton, and a brother, G. R. Taft of Detroit. Mr. Taft was 67 years old.
