Tannheimer, M.D., 90, died Thursday at Meijer Heart Center following a brief illness. His kindness and compassion extended far and wide, to both humans and animals, and he will be deeply missed. He was born in Yankton, SD, to John S. and Rose Marie Tannheimer. He received degrees from Yankton College and Northwestern Medical University of Chicago, and competed his medical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy on two hospital ships, the U.S.S. Refuge and the Repose. He and all five of his brothers remained in the service for the duration of the war. Dr. Tannheimer ran a private practice in Ionia for more than 25 years and served as medical director for the state prison system before retiring. He was a lifelong learner who loved to travel, visit museums, and correspond with his children and grandchildren. His interests and hobbies varied widely but his true passions were fishing on Lake Michigan and golfing as many days as Michigan weather allowed. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; daughter, Joan and husband, Kenneth Foster, of Santa Cruz, CA; sons, John and wife, Sue, of Lowell, MA; David of Marlboro, MA; Mark and wife, Linda, of Brighton, MA; step-daughters Beth Gazella of Kailua, HI, and Kim Gazella of Raleigh, NC; brother, Francis of Portola, CA; sister, Rosemarie of Mission Viejo, CA; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul; brothers, Anton, Joseph, Paul and Robert; and sister, Agnes. Private services were held by the family. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice, with special emphasis on efforts directed at medical research or animal welfare organizations.
