J. Taubert Veteran of Civil War

Dead At Age of 71 and Resident Of Ionia More Than Half Century.

Julius Taubert, one of Ionia’s pioneer residents and a venerated and respected 
citizen, died this morning at 5:30 at his residence, 452 West Washington 
street.  He was 71 years of age and had been seriously ill two weeks and in 
failing health for two years.  Funeral services will be held at the residence 
Sunday afternoon at three o’clock, Rev. E. E. Branch officiating.  Interment 
will be in Oak Hill.

Mr. Taubert was a resident of Ionia since nine years of age, when he came here 
with his parents.  At the age of 18 years he went into the carriage making 
business, which he had followed to the time of his last illness.

At the opening of the civil war he enlisted in the West Michigan Engineering 
corps and served through the war marching with Sherman’s army to the sea.  At 
the close of the war he returned to Ionia and his business, being one of the 
members of the firm of Caine & Taubert for 21 years.

He is survived by his widow, to whom he was married nearly 50 years, and four 
children, Mrs. Jessie Parsons of Rochester, N.Y., who was a Red Cross nurse in 
Belgium during the first part of the war; Mrs. C. G. Willoughby of New York 
city; Mrs. Frank Dillbahner of Chicago, and Archie Taubert of Manitowoc, Wis.  
he also leaves a sister, Mrs. Karmsen of Bay City and a brother, Ed. Taubert of 
Flint.  All the children are expected here for the funeral, which will be in 
charge of The Wm. H. Borden post, G.A.R.
