He had been ill several months, but was on Kent Street Tuesday and Wednesday, greeting his friends. Soon after he returned to his home Wednesday his condition became much worse and for several hours before his death he was unconscious. Funeral services were held at the house, Monday afternoon, and were private. Rev. John H. Stewart, of Sparta, officiated. Mr. Taylor was born at Seneca, N. Y. Dec. 22, 1839. His wife, who died 10 months ago, was Mrs. Sarah Earl (nee Jolly) and they were married 53 years ago. They first lived in Lyons and then moved to the farm east of Portland where they resided until they moved to the village three years ago. They had no children of their own, but Otto Taylor, of the Ionia post office force and Archie Green a well-known farmer were brought up by the Taylors and regarded as their own. Since the death of Mrs. Taylor a niece, Mrs. H. S. Hill, has looked after the household affairs and enabled Mr. Taylor to keep up the home. A step-sister, Mrs. Susan Daily, lives at Ovid, and came to attend the funeral. Mr. Taylor was a democrat but cared little for polities. His popularity once secured for him election as supervisor, but he cared so little for office that he did not fill out his term. He enlisted in the Third Michigan Inf. in the days of the Civil War.
