His father, Ely Taylor, removed to Sodus, where he resided until Charles was 17 years of age, when he moved with his father to Shelby, Orleans county, where he lived two years and then came to Plymouth, Wayne county,Mich., residing there about one year, and then removed to Portland, Ionia county. Where now stands the beautiful village of Portland there were but two or three log houses. He voted at the first town meeting held in the township, the total number of votes polled being 36. He continued to live there until seven years ago he came to this place. During the past four years his health failed, and last January the cancer commenced its fatal work. In April he went to Ionia and had it removed, but to no effect. He has been a terrible sufferer. It having worked upon his brain, so much so, that toward the last he did not realize much.He died in full faith of hi "Saviour, leaving strong evidence behind." He leaves a wife, four sons and one daughter, besides many friends in this county whom he had won by his kindness to all. Father dear in sweetly resting In the arms of Jesus, now, Resting from earth's cares and trouble With no shadow on his brow. Long he lingered here in anguish What he suffered none can tell, Till one night his Saviour whispered 'Tis enough, come home to dwell. H.K.
