Taylor, formerly of Portland, aged 70 years. Mr. Taylor was one of the very oldest settlers of the township, having come to Portland in 1838, from New York, and did his first work for Abram S. Wadsworth, whom all our old settlers will remember, building a dam across Grand river. In this and other sorts of work he paid for a farm from Mr. Wadsworth, who at that time owned much of the land in this vicinity. After Mr. Taylor had been here a couple of years he sent glowing reports of the country to his father’s family, still in the old home in the then far away state of New York, and desired them to follow, which they did in 1840. At that time the only horse team owned in this section was by Churchill & Co. and this Mr. Taylor borrowed and drove to Detroit, and brought his father and his family to Portland. The journey required fifteen days—now it is made in four hours. In religious belief Mr. Taylor was always a Universalist, but of the entire family of a number of boys Mr. Taylor was always a democrat. His first vote with that party was cast for James K. Polk, in 1844. He always remained a democrat. While Mr. Taylor had some faults, like all of us, he as a good, well meaning, honest man. He was a good husband, loving father, accommodating brother and neighbor; and if the world contained no worse men than “Uncle Charlie” Taylor was, it would be much better than it now is.
