All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Ransom mlnransom@chartermi.net June 27, 2010, 3:04 pm The Ionia Standard, Friday, February 18, 1918 John Terry, one of Ionia’s pioneer settlers, died from bronchial pneumonia, Wednesday morning, February 9, at 7:20, at the home of Mrs. ….East Main Street, having lived to the age of 85 years. Mr. Terry came to this country with his parents when but 9 years of age, settling with them in Pennsylvania. He served three years in the Civil war, first as a private in Co. K, 27th Regiment New Jersey infantry, then in Co. M, 1st New Jersey cavalry, and came after the war to Michigan in 1865. In 1856 Mr. Terry was married to Hannah A Hayward of Sparta, N.J. To this union was born four children: S. L. Terry of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Mrs. Myra Arntz of Orange township, Ionia county, Mrs., Ida Sanford of Danville, Ill.; (now deceased), and Mrs. Elizabeth Jack of this city. Besides these Mr. Terry leaves to mourn his death three brothers: Charles Terry of Grand Rapids, Benjamin Terry of Gowen, Edward Terry of Detroit; and one sister, Mrs. Emma Cumberworth of Middleton, Michigan. Also 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren who all will remember his loving kindnesses to them. MR. Terry’s loss will not only be felt by his relatives but also to a great number of local friends and particularly the numerous children who knew him as a cheerful and beloved old gentleman with a never-failing supply of peppermint candy. To best express the consensus of opinion of all who knew him is to say, “To know him was to love him.” Card of Thanks: We wish to thank, with great appreciation, the loving kindness of our dear friends and neighbors, for the beautiful flowers and the sweet singing at the funeral of our father, John Terry, and the brave men of the G.A.R., will also please accept our many thanks.
