The Lowell Ledger, Thursday, June 2, 1904


The subject of this sketch whose maiden name was Mary J. Van Leuven was born 
at Stone Ridge, Ulster county, New York May 6, 1836 and spent her early life 
there.  January 28, she was married to Benj. Terwilliger of the same county 
and the following Spring they came with her father’s family, to Michigan and 
settled in Vergennes.  Two daughters were born to them, Mrs. Katie Oliver and 
Miss Lizzie Terwilliger.

About 32 years ago they moved to Lowell and Mr. Terwilliger built their 
present pleasant home.  Since then they resided here, with the exception of 
seven years, which they spent in Ionia.

Mrs. Terwilliger has been in poor health for a year or more but was unwilling 
to give up and her most intimate friends did not realize the extent of her 
ailments.  About four weeks ago she was prevailed upon to take her bed and 
since then has failed rapidly until death came to her relief on Sunday 
afternoon May 29.

Mrs. Terwilliger had been a member of the M. E. church for many years and that 
her daily life and acts of kindness proved her genuine Christianity those who 
knew her best can testify.

Funeral services were conducted at the home yesterday afternoon  y Rev. Chas. 
Nease.

A sorrowing husband, two daughters, one sister, Mrs. Isaac Ritter of Groton, 
N. D., and two brothers, Wm. and Alonzao Van Leuven both of Orange township, 
Ionia county, are left to mourn, beside one uncle two aunts and many other 
relatives and friends.
