After dinner he had lain down to take a nap, from which he failed to awaken. Mr. Tew's health had not been of the best for two or three years but it was only during the past year that it has caused him much apprehension. He was the last surviving member of the business firm of E. C. Tew & Sons, widely known for over fifty years, and had been in the store about half of the time during the last several months. His wife, who has been closely identified with the business for many years, has been in charge of the store much of the time lately, and Wednesday morning, as the walks were so icy, he advised her to take a lunch and not come home for dinner. Accompanied by Mrs. Tew, he went to Texas in November where he took treatments for about two weeks and on his return it was thought that he was on the gain. Mr. Tew had been greatly interested in music practically all his life. When he was in his early 'teens his father, who had organized a band at Tremayne's corners, gave him an alto horn and told him to get busy with it. Later he was given a baritone, and then a cornet. He became a very proficient performer successively on these instruments. After coming to Lake Odessa in 1894, he played in practically all of the local bands and orchestras organized throughout the succeeding years, and was a member of the community orchestra until his health compelled him to give up that activity about eight or nine months ago. He had been a member of the old Ionia and Charlotte city bands for several years. He had been a member of the Methodist church all his life and had been one of the trustees of Central church here for probably the last fifteen years. For several years he assisted in the church music with his cornet and later directed the choir for five or six years. Mr. Tew in former years had served several terms on the village council, and had been village park commissioner. Edgar A. Tew was born in Berlin township on May 3, 1869. On Christmas eve of 1891 he was married to Miss Ida Bennett, also a resident of Berlin township. A few months later he was taken into the E. C. Tew and Sons firm, as the youngest member. For many years he was in charge of the shoe, notions, dry goods, and ladies' furnishings departments, and was advertising manager for the firm. His father died in 1920, and his brother Charles retired from the firm about eight years ago, since which time Ed and Mrs. Tew have conducted the store. He had a large acquaintance and had made a host of friends throughout the southern part of the county. The deceased is survived by his widow, one nephew Charles E. Tew here, a niece Mrs. Mary Snyder of Ionia, and his aged mother-in-law, Mrs. Bennett, who has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Tew for several years. The funeral will be held from the late home at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon, the Rev. Leon W. Manning, pastor of Central church officiating. The bearers will be Fred A. Uriel, David Leak, David Smith, Glenn L. Covert, John Griffin, and Jason E. Peacock. Interment will be made by the side of his father and mother in Lakeside cemetery. Local business places will be closed during the services."
