Tew and Sons' large department store here died at his home Wednesday evening about 11 o'clock. Had Mr. Tew lived until June 19 he would have been 82 years old, but he has had exceptional health and strength and has been at the store a large part of the time until about five weeks ago when his physical nature weakened. His mind has been alert and active, taking interest in the business almost to the last. Mr. Tew was born in Madison county, N. Y. and came to Ionia county, Michigan 56 years ago, locating in Easton township, later moving to Berlin township and from there, with his sons Edgar A. and Chas. E., going to business in lake Odessa where he has seen their store advance from a small beginning to a large department store occupying the floor space of three good stores, all doing a big business. Mr. Tew married Hannah Mason of Madison County, N Y., who died Jan. 12, 1914. Aside from the sons above mentioned he leaves an adopted daughter, Mrs. Flora Coon of Berlin township, two grandchildren, Chas. Tew, Jr., also associated in the business, and Mrs. Mary Caswell, also two great-grandchildren. Mr. Tew served as village president one year and has always been a supporter of any worthy enterprise for the advancement of the village. His influence has been one of a strong character with all his associations. One of his strong characteristics was his methodical habits. He always aiming on being the first man at he store and the one to lock up at night, as well as his being dependable in all relations. Years ago Mr. Tew identified himself with the Methodist church where he proved himself loyal and substantial, being an official member during his membership. he was also one of the Building Board when the present church was erected. He has been chorister for probably fifteen years or until his eyesight obliged him to give up the work and it was transferred to his son Edgar.
