Dr. Phil Tharp, age 65, passed from this realm of sorrow into the glories of 
Heaven on Sunday, January 30, 2005.  Dr. Tharp was a preacher and pastor of 
several churches for over 35 years.  His ministry literally spans the globe.  
His three sons, Dr. Darren (Starr) Tharp of Ionia, Dr. Eric, (Janne) Tharp of 
Holyoke, MA, and Dr. Russell (Julie) Tharp of Boyne City are all pastors of 
local churches.  His two daughters, Lisa (Doug) Yoder of Gobles, and Althea 
(Jeff) Nordquist of Porto Alegre, Brazil, are both married to ministers of the 
Gospel.  His youngest daughter, Patricia lived her life to care for her daddy.

He was married to Joyce (Reum) Tharp in 1987 who sat by his side.  Dr. Tharp 
had 30 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Dr. Tharp was a member of his 
son Darren’s church – Lincoln Ave. Baptist Church of Ionia.  He joined there 
recently after retiring from his previous church.  He loved his new church 
family.  After being very sick with Guillan Barre Syndrome since 2001, he had 
recovered greatly and was continuing to be used of God to bless many lives.  
The world has lost a real man of God and Heaven has gained due to our loss.

Visitation is Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home of 
Ionia.  Then again on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Lincoln Ave. Baptist 
Church with the Funeral Services immediately following at 12 p.m.  Memorial 
contributions are being received at Lincoln Ave. Baptist Church, 345 E. Lincoln 
Ave., Ionia.  The Dr. Philip M. Tharp memorial trust fund will be used to help 
his youngest daughter who is developmentally disabled.
