The Ionia Standard, Friday, August 18, 1886

Eugene Thayer died Wednesday night at the hotel from injuries received the 
fore part of July while intoxicated at Ionia.  Thus ends one of the strongest 
temperance lectures Palo has ever had.  A kind, generous, hard working man 
died an out-cast and must receive a burial at the hands of the county.  Will 
some of our young men heed the fate of this man or will they be as reckless as 
ever.  He that plays with the fire of rum will surely get burned.     L. D.
