W. Thomas, one of Portland’s highly esteemed citizens, was held at the late home Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. W. L. Moore, pastor of the Congregational church officiating. Death came Saturday after a lingering illness, dating back fifteen years ago when he was injured on the head from which he never fully recovered. Burial was made in the Portland cemetery. Mr. Thomas was born at DeWitt September 23, 1854. When at the age of twelve years he moved to Hubbardston with his parents. He was married to Miss Helen Homer, of Hubbardston, In the year of 1875. They resided in Hubbardston until 1890 when they moved to this village, living in the house where Mr. Thomas passed away, at the corner of Academy and Kearney streets. Mr. Thomas was a machinist and was a very proficient workman, which trade he followed until he was injured while working for the Terriff Washing Machine Co., fifteen years ago when he struck his head against a pulley. Since that time he has been failing until the last few years he had to be helped around in a wheel chair. Besides the widow he is survived by three daughters, Miss Anna Thomas and Mrs. Ruth Amerman, of Bloomfield, New Jersey; and Mrs. Hope Millar, of Benton Harbor.
