Dr. William B. Thomas died tonight after failing for several years as a result of a fall from a step ladder. He was a pioneer doctor of Ionia. He was born in Monroe county, New York in 1831. After graduating from Genese college, University of Buffalo and the University of Michigan, he came to Ionia county in 1859 locating in Muir. When the Civil war broke out, Dr. Zenas E. Bliss went to the front with the Third Michigan Infantry, prevailed upon Thomas to come to Ionia and take up his practice which he did but in 1862, Thomas enlisted as Surgeon in the Twenty-First Michigan Infantry. His health gave out and after a siege in a Nashville, Tennessee hospital came home. In 1866, he was appointed United States Marshall of the western district. In 1871, superintendent of school of Ionia county also admitted to the bar of the United States courts, given medicine very little attention. Surviving are a son and a daughter.
