Ross was born in Caro, Mich. on Nov. 4, 1931 to Claude and Mary (Ellis) Thomas. He graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1951. Ross was united in marriage to Janet Haddix on Dec. 27, 1952. Ross spent 17 years working for the Lake Odessa Canning Company as a night supervisor and then began a long career working at elevators in the Lakewood area. Ross began at the Freeport Elevator and then was a part of helping to start Woodbury Grain in the early 1960s. He went on to work at the Lake Odessa Co-Op, then managed the Sunfield Elevator and retired for the Woodbury Elevator. Ross was a vital part of the Lake Odessa community and was happy to serve where he could. He served as a Lake Odessa firefighter for almost 20 years, had served on the Lake Odessa Fire Board; and was currently serving as a member of the Lake Odessa Village Council. Ross had been a deacon and board member of the Lake Odessa Congregational Church and was currently a member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church. He and his wife had served as foster parents for 24 years. In recognition of their contributions to the community, Ross and Janet were chosen as Grand Marshals for the 2007 Fair Parade. He is survived by his loving wife, Janet; children, Jim (Tammy) Thomas, John (Kathy) Thomas, Pam (Bob) Wieland, Jayne (Mike) Brown, Patty (Mike) Spitzley, Tim (Dana) Thomas, Dan (Rosie) Thomas, Dawn (John) Sutton, Sandi (Brent) Eckardt, Rachel (Robert Jackson) Thomas and Larry (Cathy) Thomas; 25 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brother, Leroy (Erma) Thomas and many more loving relatives and friends. Ross was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Harriet Miller and Alice Dye; and brothers, John Thomas, Perry Thomas and Howard Thomas. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 and again from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 10 at the Lakewood United Methodist Church. Burial with honors provided by the Lake Odessa Fire Department will be in Lakeside Cemetery. The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to the Lakewood United Methodist Church, Faith Bible Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.
