          BERNARD S. THOMAS

   LAKE ODESSA - Bernard S. Thomas, 79, of Lake Odessa, died Friday at a Midland
Nursing Home.

   He was born Nov. 25, 1903, in Lake Odessa, the son of Sidney and Blanche Knapp
Thomas. He graduated 
from Lake Odessa High School in 1921 and received his teaching certificate from
Western Michigan University 
in 1931.

   He married Uceba Daniels in August 1931. He taught school for 10 years in Lawton,
Mich., and in 1938 
established his own carpentry business.

   In 1953 he was employed at the Ionia Reformatory, from which he retired in 1956.

   He attended the Lake Odessa Congregational Church and was a past member of the
Lions Club.

   He is survived by wife Uceba; three sons, Lowell of Midland; Douglas of Grand
Blanc; and Bruce, out of 
state; one daughter, Mrs. Gene (Bernadine) Carr of Lake Odessa; and eight
grandchildren.

   Funeral services were Monday at 1  p.m. at the Pickens-Kooops Funeral Chapel,
Lake Odessa, with Rev. 
Randall Kohls officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery.

   A memorial has been established for the Lake Odessa Fire Department, in the care
of the funeral chapel.
