Francis “Fran” Thomas, 61, of Ionia went to be with his Lord Aug. 20, 2002 after
a courageous battle with cancer.  He was born May 5, 1941 in Berlin Township,
the son of Claude R. and Jessie M. (Emelander) Thomas.  Fran became a mechanic
at an early age and worked at most of the garages in Ionia.  He could fix just
about anything that came his way.

He loved his dogs, Mopars, and John Deere.  He enjoyed watching the Detroit
Lions and NASCAR races.  He also was a survivor of Polio when he was five years
of age.

He is survived by his brothers, Claude (Margaret) Thomas of Ionia, Dick (Dee)
Thomas of Ionia, Leo and (Carolyn) Thomas of Ionia; sisters, Rose Moon of
Lowell, Martha Schwarz of Portland and Kathleen (Kay) Burton) Taylor of Ionia;
one brother-in-law, Ken Ward of Portland; many nieces and nephews and
great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Frank; brother, Wilbur;
sisters, Mary Ward and Ruth Thomas; and two brothers-in-law, Howard Moon and
Glen Schwarz.

Funeral services for Mr. Thomas will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Lake
Funeral Home in Ionia, with Rev. David Flagel officiating.  Interment Balcom
Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.,
Wednesday at the funeral home.  Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions
to Ionia Area Hospice or the Berlin Center Church.
