Stanley Roof Thomas, 98, of Ionia died Thursday morning at the Ionia Manor 
where he had been a patient for several years.  He was born in Ionia on 
September 29, 1887, the son of Charles and Clara Roof Thomas.

He graduated from Ionia High School with the class of 1907.  He graduated from 
The University of Michigan in 1912 with a Bachelor in Science Degree of 
Engineering.

He was employed as automotive engineer and as chief engineer for various 
companies including the Hudson Motor Car Co., Jordan Motors, Peerless Motors, 
Cord and Auburn Companies, and The Torington Bearing Co.

He retired to the family farm in Lyons in 1947 and farmed until 1960 when he 
retired for a second time and moved to Horizon Drive in Ionia.

He was a direct descendant of a pioneer Lyons family, his grandfather, Adam 
Roof having been one of the first attorneys in Ionia County.

He was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ionia.  He was also a 
life member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and a member of the Emeritus 
Club of The University of Michigan.

He was a past member of the Northeastern Gun and Country Club of Cleveland, 
Ohio, and also the Ionia County Fishing and Hunting Club. 

Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Vosper Thomas of Ionia, A daughter, Mrs. Robert 
(Sally) Kreamelmeyer of Montrose Colo., a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Pearl Thomas of 
Wellesley Hills, Mass., a stepson, James Vosper of Appleton, Wis., 5 
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

There will be no funeral service or visitation.  Arrangements by the Montgomery-
Leddick Funeral Home.
