Thompson was born on May 10, 1831 in Ray, Macomb county, and was killed on what is known as the Russell crossing on the Pere Marquette railroad at about 11 o’clock Tuesday forenoon, Nov. 1, by west-bound passenger train No. 31. He was one of a family of five boys, named respectively, Holley, Robert, William, George and Gilbert, of whom but two, George and Gilbert, survive him. Gilbert lives at Fenton, Mich., and George resides at Larramore, Grand Forks county, North Dakota. In 1833 Mr. Thompson came to Smyrna settling upon the land where is now located the Thompson homestead, and in the same year became united in marriage to Miss Mary Patch. To them two children were born one of whom, a daughter, died in infancy, but the other, a son, Fred, is living in West Otisco. The funeral services were held at the late home of the deceased, conducted by the Rev. Albert Secord, pastor of the Belding Congregational church. Interment was had in the Smyrna cemetery. As evidence of the universal regard and esteem in which Mr. Thompson was held by all his neighbors and acquaintances we have only to note the great gathering at the funeral. Everybody, near and far, suspended work that afternoon and paid their last respects to one whom all considered a friend. Mr. Thompson has lived 34 years in the one place and we have yet to learn that he had an enemy or detractor. Always the same, in all conditions of life, he preserved an invariable cheerfulness of demeanor and buoyancy of spirits that endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. His widow on whom the loss of her husband bears with especial severity, has the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
