Jim served in the United States Navy 1951 to 1955. He owned and operated Thompson Oil from 1972 to 1982, Germaine's Restaurant from 1982 to 1995, and then worked for CDS in Saranac in his retirement years. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, member of TPA where he was past Post 1 president, member of American Legion, Ionia Moose, VFW, and Ionia Hunting and Fishing Club. He was an original member of Saranac Community Club and the MC of the Community Club fun raising dinner for 24 years. He was voted Citizen of the year in 2011 for the Saranac Bridge Festival. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Germaine; children Michael (Debra) Thompson of Saranac, Randy (Jill) Thompson of Saranac, Doug (Connie) Thompson of Saranac, Kay (Steve) Metternick of Saranac, and Beth (Dave) Pierce of Lyons; 8 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 7 step great grandchildren. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers anyone wishing may make memorial contributions in Jim's name to Ionia Hospice or St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
