On Tuesday morning just as the train for Grand Rapids was pulling into Smyrna, David Thompson a farmer residing near that place was crossing the track in the vicinity of the flouring mill and the train struck his wagon smashing it to pieces, and throwing him about eighty feet, breaking his neck and cutting a large hole in his head, killing him almost instantly. Mr. Thompson had just been up to Chars. Dumons house and was returning when the terrible accident happened. One of the horses was knocked down by the force of the blow but both escaped any serious injury. Mr. Thompson was well and favorably known in this city and vicinity and was the father of Fred Thompson living near Cook’s Corners. He was about 75 years of age and it is said was a little deaf. There is an electric bell at this crossing but if it rang he undoubtedly did not hear it. It is said that it does not sound the alarm only occasionally. The fearful accident removes one of Otisco’s most respected citizens.
