Thorington, 63, of Belding passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004 at his home while under the loving care of his family and Hospice. He was born May 17, 1940 in a log cabin near Kalkaska the son of Raymond and Nellie Outman Thorington. Stan graduated from Greenville High School with the class of 1958. He attended Montcalm Community College and Davenport College in Grand Rapids. Stan was a member of the Belding-Ionia F&AM Lodge #355, the TPA, the Sunday Night Fun Bowling League and the Michigan Corrections' Officer Union. He worked for the Department of Corrections as a corrections officer at the Deerfield Correctional Facility in Ionia where he was the Officer of the Year in 2002. He later retired that same year. Prior to his career with the Department of Corrections he worked for many years at H&H Beer Distributing. Stan had a great appreciation of Mother Nature and the outdoors. He loved to feed the birds and do yard chores on his John Deere. He also enjoyed his TV. He especially liked to watch sports-the Detroit Tigers, Lions and NASCAR. Stan never met a stranger, always had a positive outlook and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. On August 2, 1997 Stan married Billie Jean Burkhart and she survives along with their children, Craig and Marilyn Thorington of Sheridan, Kim Thorington and Dan Neeley of Belding, Mike Thorington of Grand Rapids, Jennifer Parker of Saranac, Wendy and John Magee of Vermontville and his mother Nellie Thorington of Greenville. Stan is also survived by his grandchildren, Jerrad Higgins, Elizabeth Thorington, Daniel Babbitt, Tara Babbitt, Jon and Heather Sherwood, Jamie Parker, Madalynn Burkhart, Bethany and Connor Magee, Ben and Phyllissa Neeley, and his great grandchildren Alexis, Christopher, Kaitlyn. Stan is also survived by his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Nancy and Ken Harriman of Greenville, Allan and Karen Thorington of White Cloud, June and Ed Truswell of Saranac, Ron and Alice Van Bennekom of Grand Rapids many special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, the Rick and Julie Meyers family, the Burt and Judy Van Bennekom family, the Paul and Linda Van Bennekom Family, Bryce and Sharon Weeks Family and Stephanie and Jason Smith Family. Stan was preceded in death by his father, Raymond. Funeral services for Stan will be 11 a.m. Monday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding with Fr. Scott Anderson of St. Johns Episcopal Church of Ionia officiating. Interment will be in Saranac Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home with a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lodge of the American Cancer Society, Ionia Area Hospice or Belding /Ionia Masonic Lodge #355.
