Thorne, Jr., 69, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born April 17, 1922, in Albion, the son of Albert A. and Anna E. Bearman Thorne. He was graduated from Albion Public Schools in 1940. He served in the First Marine Division in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a lieutenant in the Michigan State Police from 1946-1973, serving in several posts: Alpena, Ionia, Cheboygan and was in charge of the West Branch Post, retiring from operations in Lansing. He married it Donna Jean Case on Sept. 18, 1948, in Albion. He was a member of the VFW Post 2496 in Alpena, and a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Alpena, and the Michigan State Police Retirees. He attended St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Wayne. He is survived by his wife, Donna Jean; three daughters, Gail Modrzynski of Romulus, Constance McCauley of West Branch, and Sandra Schalk of Wayne; one son, Douglas of Lansing; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; his sister Doris Young of Albion. A daughter, Cynthia Sue, preceded him in death in 1961. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Geary Bird and the Rev. Thomas Wirsing officiating.
