She was born June 11, 1916 in Detroit, the daughter of Floyd “Todd” and Eva Marie (Cornell) Leach. A graduate of Charlotte High School in Charlotte, Elaine was a pianist, an artist, and a master seamstress. She was employed in the 1940s by LaRue Photography Studio in Charlotte, worked as a dressmaker and seamstress in Lake Odessa, and in Foley, Ala. and Gulf Shores, Ala. for more than 35 years. She attended First United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Ind., but had retained her membership at Central United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa. Elaine was also a member of Foley Senior Center in Foley, Ala. and the “55” Senior Center in Pensacola, Fla. Survivors include two daughters; Rhoda L. (Bracy) Gould of Charlotte, Sonja A. (Bracy) Jackson of Bloomington, Ind.; a son, Dexter G. Bracy of Portland; nine grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and four step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Murrell L. Thornton, in 1983; her brother, Willis Leach, of Charlotte; and a granddaughter, Dawn Elaine Gould, who died in infancy. A private memorial service will be held in Michigan at a later date. Elaine donated her body to Indiana University Medical School’s Anatomical Education Program. Interment of her cremains will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
