Thorpe, 74, passed away Monday, June 18, 2007, at Spectrum Health United Memorial United Campus, Greenville. She was born February 26, 1933, in Ionia, the daughter of Robert W. and LaVona I. Nimz Peabody. After graduating from high school, followed by the “College of Hard Knocks,” she was a mother, grandmother and mother hen to 150 kids at Meijer in Greenville, where she had worked for many years. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Thorpe; son, Steven A. Thorpe; granddaughter, Roseanne Thorpe; mother-in-law, Gladys Thorpe; sister, Elaine Cook; brother, Robert Peabody; and a special friend, Paul Bacon. She is survived by her children, Yvonne and Bill Bunce, Stuart and April Thorpe, all of Greenville; grandchildren, Michael, Manda, Nicole, Krystle and Jocelyn; sister and brother-in-law, Ken and Katie Wray of Saranac; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Marshall Funeral Home, Greenville, with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s name to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
