Thurlby was born on March 30, 1859 in Montcalm county and was the son of Richard and Margaret (Parrott) Thurlby, his father being born in Lincolnshire, England and who came to America when he was 21 years old, locating in Kent County. Mr. Thurlby died at his home in Saranac, March 21, 1945. George C. Thurlby grew to manhood on the farm where he worked when a boy and received his education in the district schools in his home community and in Lowell. He worked on a farm in South Boston three years, then began work for John Myers and John Ball, learning the carpenter and joiner trade, which he followed for many years. On January 3, 1879 he married Emma Story, daughter of pioneers George J. and Sarah Jane Story, of South Boston, and in 1880 Mr. Thurlby settled on the Story farm and lived there until 27 years ago, when he moved to Saranac where he has since made his home. He was a member of the South Boston (later Saranac) Methodist Church, past president of the south Boston Select School. Mr. Thurlby served on the first jury in the new Ionia County court house, his name being the first called to take the first seat in the grand jury box and the first case being that of a man stealing a horse blanket. The funeral was held at the late home in Saranac on March 24, with burial in South Boston cemetery, Rev. Frank Chamberlain officiated.
