All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sandy Heintzelman sheintz@iserv.net July 30, 2014, 11:15 am Belding Banner-News, 26 Feb 1942 Last County Veteran of Civil War Dies Ionia county’s oldest resident and last surviving veteran of the Civil war, Lemuel Tingley, of Ionia, passed away Monday night at the home of his son, Sidney, in Ionia. 99 years of age at the time of his death, one of his lifetime ambitions was to attain the age of 100. He was born November 11, 1942, at Hackettstown, N. J. He was a highly respected citizen, one of his outstanding virtues being his generosity. Full military services will be conducted for him this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Church of Christ in Ionia. Rev. C. A. Brady will officiate and Spanish war veterans of the Frank D. Curtis camp will act as bearers. Members of the American Legion will act as honorary guards from 12:30 until the time of the services, during which time the body will lie in state in the church. A firing squad will be formed by home guard members and taps will be sounded. Ionia Boy Scouts will act as ushers at the services, and members of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Capt. Frank D. Curtis Auxiliary and the Women’s Relief Corps will attend the services in a body and form an honorary guard as the casket leaves the church. Mr. Tingley was only 17 years old at the outbreak of the Civil war and joined the 14th regiment of York infantry. After a two year enlistment period, he enlisted with the cavalry and was assigned to McClellan’s army, taking part in the second battle of Bull Run. Following the war he came to Wood’s Corners where he lived for 40 years. For the past several years he had made his home with his son. Surviving are six sons: Sidney, Charles and Arthur of Ionia, Ora of Orleans, Ruben of Lachine and Henry of Belding, R.F.D.; one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Donaldson of Huntington, W. Va.; a brother, Orlando, of Buffalo, N. Y., and one sister.
