SERVICES HELD HERE FOR "BILLY" TISCHER

Funeral services were h eld at the Pickens Chapel here Tuesday afternoon for 
William Gene Tischer, 22, a Battle Creek war veteran, who apparently was killed 
outright early Sunday when the car he was driving crashed into a tree on US-16 
in East Grand Rapids.

East Grand Rapids officers said they believed Tischer may have fallen asleep at 
the wheel as he drove west on US-16 and awakened too late to regain control of 
the car.

Police said Tischer must have been going at a "terrific rate of speed." Marks on 
the tree which the car hit nearly head on were visible as high as 10 feet from 
the ground. Coronor Paul Bloxsom said Tischer died of a broken neck, and that 
his skull and jaw also were fractured.

"Billy" as he was known here, was born on a farm near Lake Odessa and received 
his schooling here. He served his schooling here. He served in the Navy for 
three years.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Helen Rainbow of Battle Creek and two sisters, 
Mrs.Jacquelyn Sweeney and Miss Marilyn Tischer, also in Battle Creek. The Rev. 
Victor W. Thrall officiated at the services and burial at Lakeside cemetery was 
under the auspices of LaVern Demaray post of the American Legion.

Riding with Tischer was Larry David Carrol, 17, also of Battle Creek, who is in 
a critical condition at St.Marys hospital in Grand Rapids where attendants said 
he had received a fractured skull and pelvis, a broken arm and a punctured 
bladder..
