The Portland Observer, Wednesday, January 7, 1885
Died—in Portland township, on Wednesday, December 31st, 1884, Mrs. Mary Toan, 
aged 85 years and 22 days.  The deceased was born in the county of Mathe, 
Ireland, in the year 1790, and came to Portland township with her husband from 
De Witt, Clinton county, in the year 1837, making her a resident of this 
township 47 years.  Mrs. Toan and her husband were the first white settlers in 
the northern part of the town of Portland, and there was only two or three 
houses in the village.  We expect to publish a more extended notice of the 
deceased next week.
