Tobias, a young farmer who resided on John T. Green’s farm just over the line in Danby township, was kicked to death by a colt Monday night about dark. Nobody saw the accident. Several days ago Mr. Tobias purchased a two- years-old colt of Frank Pryor. The colt was unbroken and he was leading the animal down the road by a halter. The theory is that Mr. Tobias gave the colt too much slack and the horse took advantage of it and turned upon him. A young man was driving down the road between the farms of Jason D. Woodbury and Norton P. Shuert and discovered Tobias’ prostrate body. He at once made known his discovery, and a messenger was dispatched for Dr. Martin. The latter arrived as soon as possible, accompanied by Dr. Alton. The unfortunate man was still lying in the road, and neighbors were fanning him and doing what they could. A brief examination showed the physicians that the man was beyond relief. Death was undoubtedly instantaneous. The horse’s foot had struck him directly on the chin, driving back the jaw bone, which penetrated the base of the brain. The news of Mr. Tobias’ sudden death caused much consternation on the streets last night. The unfortunate man leaves a wife and two children and carried an insurance of $2,000 in the Maccabees. He was also a member of the Royal Circle. Mr. Tobias was knocked down in the stable by the same horse only two or three days ago.
