Todd, 65, Ionia resident and businessman for nearly 30 years, died Saturday afternoon while driving his car on West Lincoln avenue. Mr. Todd had just left his home at 807 West Fargo street and was driving east on Lincoln avenue when the car went across the pavement, glanced off a tree and struck the front porch of the Marvin Kuieck residence. He was taken to the Ionia County Memorial hospital by ambulance but was dead upon arrival. Coroner Neil Phelps said death was due to a heart attack which was suffered before the car left the highway. Witnesses said they saw the car coming down Lincoln avenue but could not see anyone driving it. The car seemed to be increasing its speed, they said, when it suddenly turned across the pavement. City police said the car knocked several blocks out of the base of the porch. It then backed away and stopped across the sidewalk. John Robert Todd was born September 7, 1892 in Bad Axe the son of Mr and Mrs John Todd. He completed his early schooling there and was married to Leota Layer, December 28, 1921. The station was opened in the fall of 1929 and he has continued its operation and the distributing of fuel oil since that time. He has been active in civic and fraternal affairs in Ionia for many years. Participation included being a member of the board of directors of the Ionia Free Fair association, membership in the Chamber of Commerce, life member of Ionia Lodge No. 26 F&AM, Bay City Consistory 32nd degree Masons, and life member of Ionia Fishing and Hunting club.
