Dies Suddenly at Home at Lake, Michigan. Leaves Four Children. Funeral Wednesday. The body of Arthur Tolles, a former business man of Lake Odessa, was brought here for burial Monday afternoon. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Tolles ran a store in the building now owned by Frank Lowrey and occupied by the Fair & Hurlbut grocery and the Daylight bakery. When the family left Lake Odessa they made their home on a farm at Lake, Mich., where they have since lived, the children making homes of their own. They are Allison of Hastings, Mrs. Grace Hildinger of Cleveland, O., Forrest of Detroit, and Roy whose home is at Hammon, O. A little girl Tressie was drowned in Cedar Creek in Barry county in June 1905. All the living children with their mother were at the funeral which was held at the Congregational church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. G. J. Start preached the sermon on the subject, “None lives to himself alone and none dies to himself alone.” The music was by Messrs. William and Leon Gilson, M. G. Morgan and Mrs. Leon Gilson. The pallbearers who were old friends of the deceased were William H. McCartney, William Curtis, Al Riblet, Ora Lapo, Frank Smelker and Ed. Snobble. Burial was at Lakeside. Mr. Tolles died very suddenly being in his yard at the time. His brother Howard Tolles also died with only a few minutes illness and their father dropped dead on Lake Odessa streets in April 1905. ---- Obituary Arthur Isaac Tolles was born December 25, 1861, at Hickory Corners, Barry county, and died at his home at Lake, Clare county, April 14, 1930. His early life was spent in Barry county. On July 3, 1885 he was married to Ida Sortman of Cedar Creek and in 1887 they moved to Lake Odessa with their three-month-old son Allison, who was the first child of the village. Other children born to them were Grace, now Mrs. Frank Hildinger, Forrest, Tressie, who was drowned in June 1905, and Roy. Mr. Tolles, with his brother Howard now deceased, ran a planning mill when the village was new. The mill burned down and they moved to Woodland and ran a restaurant for a short time. Mr. Tolles then returned to Lake Odessa and entered the mercantile business in different locations in the town but for many years ran a department store in the Lowrey building. He was a liberal donator to the churches of the town and everything pertaining to the good of the village. About fifteen years ago they moved to a farm in Isabella county near Lake, Mich. Here Mr. and Mrs. Tolles spent their remaining years together. Mr. Tolles’ health for the past year has been very poor, he spending several months in Hastings under the attention of Dr. C. S. McIntyre, an old friend. But the heart was not able to function longer and he died very suddenly at his home.
