One by one the original few men who were the nucleus of this town are passing and their names are inscribed on the white slabs on the hill at the head of the lake, “The Silent City.” Howard Tolles came to Lake Odessa before the railroad was put through in 1887 and has been identified with the town since. By trade Mr. Tolles was a plumber and had a shop on main street for several years. He installed many furnaces in the homes in the village. He was a thorough workman. He was a member of the Methodist church for many years, also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Degree of Rebekah and was of a genial, jolly disposition. Last Spring he suffered a slight stroke and although not in usual health was thought to be fairly well when last Saturday he was taken suddenly ill and died almost immediately. He leaves besides his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Vereeke and two grand children of Lansing. The funeral was largely attended at Methodist church, Tuesday afternoon, The I.O.O.F. and Rebekahs, acting as escort. Rev. O.F. Bulman preached. he recited “Crossing the Bar” and Mrs. Thos. Johnson played the harmony as the audience viewed the remains. Burial was at Lake Side. Card of Thanks – We take this way of expressing our sincere thanks to the many friends and neighbors who sent flowers and so very kindly assisted us in our bereavement. Especially do we thank Reverend Bulman for his words of comfort, Mrs. Thomas Johnson for the music and the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Fraternal Orders.
