Tolles, father of Howard and Arthur Tolles of this village, dropped dead of heart disease at about seven o’clock, Monday morning, while coming down to his son’s store to open up the store as he had been doing ever since living with his son, Howard, in this village. He was stricken on the sidewalk just a short distance east of C.F. Braden’s residence, on Third street. A few people saw him fall and hurried to his assistance, but when they reached him he was breathing his last, and before he could be taken to the store which was done immediately life had left his body, and Dr. Day, who happened to be near hurried to the stricken man’s side and pronounced him dead. Mr. Tolles had been sick the earlier part of the winter but had about recovered from that illness, and aside from a little heart trouble that had bothered him at times since his sickness with the grip earlier in the year, he seemed to feel as good as he ever did, and that is saying considerable, as in all his long life, those that knew him best say that they cannot remember when he had called a doctor for sickness, and he had never had trouble with his heart until after his recent illness. The remains were taken to his old home at Cedar Creek, on Wednesday and the funeral was held from the church in that hamlet in the forenoon of that day, and his remains interred in the Cedar Creek cemetery. Mr. Tolles was born in Vermont, August 5, 1829, and lived there the earlier part of his life. He was married at Boston, Mass., to Mrs. Jane Allen when he was about 22 years of age. Soon after his marriage he moved to Michigan and located in the township of Barry, Barry Co., where he purchased a farm. In after years he sold this farm and then moved to the village of Cedar Creek and they went to carrying the mail between that village and Hastings. He followed this for a period of twelve or fourteen years, part of the time carrying the mail between Banfield and Hastings. About the time Lake Odessa was started Mrs. Tolles died, and then as his sons, Howard and Arthur, came here to locate, he came with them, and has lived here since, making a great many friends and acquaintances while here, all of whom have held him in high esteem, same as he was though of in his old Barry county home. He leaves a family of five children, Mrs. Reuben Webster, Arthur, Howard, Charles and Luther Tolles.
