AND Then Horribly Mutilated by Engine No. 22 Last Sunday morning about half past one o’clock, engine No. 22, through freight, on the D. L. & N. run over and terribly mangled the body of D. B. Tompkins near the elevators of J. B. Roe. The particulars of the accident are supposed to be about as follows: It seems the engineer was looking at the rear end of his train to see if everything was alright as there is a curve in the road at that point, and just had time to see something laying on the track and supposed it was a pile of cinders. When the train arrived in Lansing it was found that the engine had blood on it and word was sent back to the operator here to go out and examine the track. He did so and found the body of the deceased mutilated beyond recognition. Mr. Tompkins has been doctoring for the past two or three months for heart disease and the past week has been just able to be around. Saturday he was up town until 10 or 11 o’clock when he went home and a little after one o’clock thought he had better go down to the railroad and see if the switches were alright, (he was first section boss at this place) which was the last time he was seen alive. At an examination of his heart last Sunday afternoon by Drs. Lee and Dellenbaugh it was found to be enlarged this being sufficient proof that he had dropped dead on the track with heart disease before the engine had reached him. The funeral services were held yesterday forenoon in the Universalist Church Rev. H. W. Smith officiating. The remains were then taken to Howell for interment. The D. L. & N. kindly furnished the family and relatives with the use of a car for their journey. Mrs. Tompkins has the sympathy of her many friends here in this her terrible bereavement.
