Topper, 77, of Stanton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at Spectrum Health United Memorial Kelsey Campus, Lakeview. Leland was born July 30, 1928, in New Haven Township, the son of Thomas and Nora McBride Topper. He married Violet Benton on Aug. 31, 1950, in Lansing. Of the numerous occupations Leland had, semi driving was his first love. He was a talented wood craftsman and model maker. He enjoyed listening to old-time band music and watching classic westerns on television. Leland was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Violet; grandson, John Thomas Stevens; sister, Frances Bugbee; brothers, Thomas Jr., Starr, Herbert; and half sister, Mildred Larson. He is survived by two daughters, Diane and Richard Bannister of Stanton, Beverly and Drew Stowell of Stanton; two sons, William and Janet Topper of Pinehurst, Texas, Leland Topper Jr. of Mississippi; eight grandchildren, Larry Stevens Jr., Kelly, Jarod, Adam and Trevor Topper, Carrie and Brett Hallihan, Brandon Stowell, Kami Alexander; four great-grandchildren, Alec Topper, Allyson and Jacob Stevens, Torin Topper; and sister, Thelma Sanderson of Alma. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday at Lux and Schnepp Funeral home, Crystal, with Pastor Reid Martin officiating. Interment will be in East Plains Cemetery, Matherton. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice.
