She had been ill three or four months, being taken with la grippe, which was afterwards complicated with other troubles. He maiden name was Martha Gallagher, and she was born in Letterkenney, Ireland, June 28, 1811. She came to America when about four years old, and on the death of her mother soon after, became the adopted daughter of Dr. James Wade, then a resident of Watervliet, New York. She was married to Osmond Tower at that place, Sept. 1, 1834. They came west the same fall, locating in Detroit at first, and in the fall of 1835, Mr. Tower came to Ionia and located land near the village, which then consisted of two log houses. He and his wife moved here in the spring of 1836, and lived here the remainder of their lives, enjoying to an unusual degree the confidence and respect of a wide circle of acquaintances. Four children were born to them, the eldest of whom died, the other three, Osmond S., Angelo E., and James F., being well known residents of the city. ---- The funeral of Mrs. Martha Tower, widow of the late Osmond Tower, took place from the family residence Monday afternoon, and was largely attended by old- time friends. The services were conducted by Rev. A. Cornell, assisted by Rev. W.W. Walsh. Mr. Cornell is the pioneer preacher of this county, and had known the deceased since the days of the earliest settlement of Ionia, and he paid an earnest tribute to her womanly character. The music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mr. Jas. A. Latta, Mr. W.E. Kelsey, Mrs. C.W. Parsons and Mrs. E.R. Bailey, with Miss Isa Vosper as organist. There was no attempt at a general ornate floral display, but the casket was covered with a profusion of beautiful lilies. Interment was in the family lot at Highland Park.
