April 6, 1916 MRS. SARAH B. TOWER DEAD. Ionia In Mourning Over Demise of Splendid Woman – Unable To Endure Surgical Operation. Ionia is in deepest sorrow today, over the demise of a good woman gone before. And the distressing suddenness of her death makes the occasion doubly hard to reconcile. Mrs. Sarah B. Tower returned from Chicago only last Friday, having spent the winter with her children in Des Moines, Iowa, and Chicago. She was not alarmingly ill upon her return, though she was fatigued, somewhat. On Monday, medical attendance was summoned, and on Wednesday there was a consultation of doctors, with surgeons from Grand Rapids in attendance, and it was decided to operate on the patient. The operation was performed on Wednesday evening at seven o’clock, and at 2:30 Thursday morning she passed away. Mrs. Tower was a life-long and devoted member of the Episcopal church, and on Wednesday afternoon, after being told that she must undergo operation that evening, she received communion and her strength then was such that she said all the prayers and responses with perfect clearness. She rallied slightly after the operation but the shock affected her heart and death was inevitable. Mrs. Tower was Sarah Bartholomew, daughter of A. M. Bartholomew of Detroit, where she spent her girlhood. She was only nineteen at the time of her marriage in September, 1862, to Osmond S. Tower, whom she met while a student at Ypsilanti. For several years the home was at Edmore, but after death of Mr. Tower’s father they moved to Ionia, where they lived for about thirty years at the home on Union street, which belonged to the estate. Four children were born to them, one, Albert, dying in infancy, Mrs. W. B. Carpenter of Chicago, Mrs. G. E. Jamerson of Fort Shafter; Honolulu and F. A. Tower of Des Moines, Iowa, survive. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hawley of Los Angeles and Mrs. John Cooper of Detroit are left. Mr. Tower died in July, 1910. Mrs. Tower was appointed a life member of the Hall-Fowler Memorial Library Board at the time the Library was given to the city by Mrs. Fowler ten years ago, and has been an energetic and valuable member ever since. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the house, Lafayette street. Rev. A. R. Mitchell will officiate. Mrs. Carpenter reached here Wednesday morning and was with her mother before her death. A cable from Mrs. Jamerson announces that she will sail from Honolulu on April ?1, when the first boat leaves there. The trip here will take about a week.
