Daily Sentinel - Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1880

                             Death of George W. Tower

A telegram was received here yesterday, announcing the death, at Detroit, at 
9 o'clock, of George W. Tower, eldest son of Hon. O. Tower, of this place. 
His father had gone to Detroit this evening before, in response to a 
dispatch, informing him of his sons dangerous illness. the remains, it is 
expected, will arrive here on the 3 o'clock train, and the funeral will take 
place tomorrow. The hour will be given in the SENTINEL, tomorrow morning. 
The deceased is well known here. He was born in 1836, the same year that his 
parents settled in Ionia, and was therefore about 44 years of age. George 
will be remembered by those who were boys with him as a boy with a big 
heart, generous to a fault; a fast friend and an enemy to no one, unless it 
might be himself. When quite young he went to California, but did not make a 
fortune there. For many years he has been engaged in the railroad business, 
a large portion of the time acting as route agent. Up to yesterday afternoon 
the intelligence of his death had not been broken to his mother, who is 
quite ill. It is sad indeed to be thus cut down in the prime of his life.

The funeral services of the late George W. Tower will take place from the 
residence of his father at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The remains arrived on 
the four o'clock train yesterday afternoon, and were accompanied from 
Detroit by a committee of three expressmen, friends of the deceased. Their 
names were Charles Harper, J.T. McCurdy and O.B. Canney.
