Tower, well known Civil War veteran, died early Monday morning at his home in Saranac after a week of serious illness following a protracted period of failing health. Mr. Tower was born in Oakland county, February 17, 1841. He moved with his parents to Gratton when he was but four years of age and then was taken to a farm near Cook’s corners when he was twelve. He continued to live there until the opening of the Civil War. He enlisted in Company C, First Michigan Engineers, December 24, 1863. In September 1865 he was promoted to a sergeantcy. He went through a number of important engagements and was with Sherman on the march to the sea. He was mustered out of service in September 1865. Returning for the war, Mr. Tower went to the old farm and on July 1, 1876 was united in marriage to Miss Eva Peterson, of Smyrna. He went with his bride to the Cook’s corners farm and lived there until failing health last December caused him to move to Saranac to make his home with his son, Glen Tower. Besides Glen he leaves two sons, Ray Tower, Tampa, Florida, and Gordon Tower, Salem, Oregon, and a daughter, Mrs. Earl Norton, who lives on the old homestead. Funeral services are to be from Belding with Rev. H. S. Ellis officiating. Burial at Otisco cemetery.
