Tower at 12:30 Sunday. Mrs. Tower’s maiden name was Edwards. She was born in England, January 18, 1843, but came to this country when quite young. Her father died when she was a child, and her mother was married to Mr. John Pickford, who was appointed station agent of the D & M road, at this place, which he held for several years prior to and during the war. He afterwards moved to Lansing, where he was appointed station agent, dying while he held that position. Eliza was married to Geo. W. Tower, oldest son of Osmond Tower, January 9, ’64. Mr. Tower died ten or eleven years ago. All of Mrs. Tower’s immediate family who were residents of Ionia have died except one—her sister Ann, who is married and lives in California. A niece, Mrs. Geo. B. Dort of Detroit, daughter of a deceased brother, was with her during the last few days of her illness, and her presence was a great comfort to the sick woman. Mrs. Tower has always been highly esteemed by the members of her husband’s family, who have done everything possible for her comfort during her long sickness. She was a woman of excellent natural endowments and with admirable traits of character that accrued her many friends in this city, which has been her home for over thirty years. The funeral services for Mrs. Eliza C. Tower were held at St. John’s Episcopal church Tuesday p.m. Rev. Campbell Fair, D.D., of Grand Rapids, officiating. The solemn ritual was made the more impressive by the clergyman’s earnest delivery, and the excellent music. The interment was beside her husband, in Highland park. Only one relative by blood, Mrs. Dort, was present, her two sisters, the last survivors of her father’s family, residing in California. There was a good attendance of friends, however, to whom she was very dear, and by whom she is sincerely mourned.
