The Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard, Friday, November 6, 1914

William Towner, an old resident of Portland, died at that place Thursday 
morning after a general failure of his health extending over the past two 
years.  Mr. Towner was born in England and came to this county in a sailing 
vessel, the journey requiring four weeks and four days to compete.  He settled 
in Danby in 1854 and resided there for 55 years.  He was a member of the 21st 
Michigan infantry.  The funeral will be held tomorrow morning.
