Velma was born Aug. 20, 1916 in Sheridan to Leslie and Mildred (Hanchett) Sherd. She had been a longtime resident of Belding, and was a member of the VFW Post 5065 Ladies Auxiliary of Sheridan and the Green Corners Baptist Church. Velma is survived by two daughters, Phyllis (Marvin) Wiles of Carson City, and Linda (Steven) Foote of Greenville; four grandchildren, Jeff Wiles and Scott (Wendy) Wiles, both of Carson City, Cortland (Jennifer Skoog) of Ionia and Tracy (Rebecca) Sawdy of Sheridan; one sister, Betty (Richard) Harriman of Fenwick; three brothers, Gerald Sherd and Ronald (Mary) Sherd, both of Sheridan, Harland (Darlene) Sherd of Greenville; one brother-in-law, Ralph Field, of Edmore; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy Field; and four brothers, Joseph, Robert, Harold and Duane Sherd. Visitation is 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Stebbins & Simpson Funeral Home, Sheridan. Pastor Wayne Otto of the Heartland Community Church will be officiating. Interment at Palo Cemetery, Palo. The family suggests memorial contributions to the VFW Post 5065 Ladies Auxiliary at Sheridan.
