Oct. 19, 1931 Saturday evening at 7:15 o’clock, two weeks after the burial of her husband, Mrs. Ellen J. Townsend, 85, died at her home on Lovell Place. Mr. Townsend died Wednesday, November 30, and while the funeral plans were being made Mrs. Townsend fell down a flight of stairs, receiving what was thought to be minor injuries. She remained in bed the next day, but the following day got up and attended the funeral and burial services of her husband. The shock seemed too great for one so frail, and one of her advanced years, and she began failing rapidly. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. R. E. Karban and Dr. Willard K. Spencer at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial will be in the Balcom cemetery. Mrs. Townsend was born in Grand Blanc. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David McNeill. She was united in marriage in 187 in Grand Blanc, and came immediately to Ionia county, her home for 54 years. She held a life membership in Queen Esther chapter, O.E.S., and in spite of the fact that she had been practically blind several years, she was nearly always at the meetings of the chapter. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, and in her pew whenever her health and conditions permitted. She is survived by two sons, Fred J. Townsend, of Ionia; and Neill Townsend, of Detroit; two grandchildren and a brother, Arthur McNeill, of Grand Ledge.
